What is SMILE?
(Small Incision Lenticule Extraction)
SMILE is a gentle, minimally invasive option for laser vision correction that brings the best of both worlds: improvement of vision and quick healing. It’s an evolution in laser vision correction that could be just what you need to see your best!
It corrects nearsightedness and astigmatism using the ZEISS VisuMax femtosecond laser to create a lenticule extracted through an incision of fewer than 4 millimeters. The lenticule is then removed through the incision, correcting your vision. SMILE means a faster recovery for patients, meaning you can get back to the things you love in the blink of an eye.
Who is a Candidate for SMILE?
● At least 22 years old
● Have had a stable glasses prescription for at least a year
● Nearsighted or have nearsightedness with astigmatism
● In good general health
● Have healthy eyes
● Not be currently pregnant or nursing
● Realistic expectations about what SMILE can achieve
What is the Difference Between LASIK and SMILE?
LASIK and SMILE are both laser eye surgery procedures used to correct vision problems. One significant difference between the two is that LASIK can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. However, SMILE can only correct nearsightedness or nearsightedness with astigmatism. Another significant difference between the two is the way the cornea is treated during the procedure. In LASIK, a laser is used to create a flap in the cornea and then the underlying tissue is reshaped with another laser to correct your refractive error. SMILE, on the other hand, uses a single laser to remove a small amount of tissue to correct the refractive error.
